Improving Access To Our Team
Due to Covid 19 our appointment booking system has changed!
It is a quick and convenient way of contacting your GP without the hassle of phoning the surgery. You will get a response within two working days.
We do not routinely offer face to face appointments with a GP or Nurse Practitioner without prior assessment by our clinical team.
When you phone us the GP’s have instructed our Receptionists to direct you to Online Consult for non-urgent or administrative matters. By using Online Consult you will be assessed and contacted by a member of our clinical team within 48 hours.
This avoids the hassle of trying to get through on the phones.
If you can’t use Online Consult our Receptionist will take full details of your reason for calling and depended on your issue, initially they will:
- Try to resolve your issue themselves e.g. for administrative enquiries
- ‘Signpost’ you to appropriate support – this could be a GP’s Medical Secretary or a Pharmacy for example (if safe and appropriate)
If 1 and 2 above are not appropriate, depending on the severity of your issue, the Receptionist will organise a clinical triage slot (usually same day) or a telephone appointment. In both cases we ring you.
As a result of these options you may be invited to a face to face appointment by the GP or Nurse Practitioner which they will book with you.
About Our Appointments
We have appointment schedules for our GPs, Nurse Practitioner and Practice Nurse team.
We operate from two sites, our main location being St James Medical Centre and also at Orchard Medical Centre (our branch surgery site) in Norton Fitzwarren.
GPs and nurses hold clinics at both sites and there is some flexibility about which site you can be seen at.
We have a skilled Nurse Practitioner who supports the GPs with some of the ‘same day’ urgent appointment work as well as managing patients with long term conditions.

Please do not attend the surgery without an appointment, Covid 19 restrictions still apply.
Please be sure to let us know in good time if you can’t make your appointment, so that we can reallocate it.
Making An Appointment

Our skilled Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Care Practitioner and can help patients with ongoing medical conditions and minor illnesses. Our Patient Services Assistants may offer you an appointment with her as an alternative to your GP.
Telephone Assessment By The Doctor
This is sometimes called ‘triage’.
When all appointment slots are taken we can offer a Triage Appointment if you feel you have the need of urgent medical attention that day.
When you speak to the Patient Services Assistants they will ask for details of your current medical concerns. Whilst you are not obliged to provide this information it will assist our medical team in managing your call effectively.
The GP will call you back, usually at the end of the clinic session to assesses your needs and decide how to manage your problem. Please ensure that you have your phone to hand.
In an emergency call 999.
8:00am to 6:30pm – Telephone the surgery at any time of day (01823 285400).
Outside of opening hours – Telephone NHS 111 by dialling ‘111’ (calls are free to this number).
This services is only for patients who are truly housebound or those who are severely ill and cannot be mobilised.
It is better for patients to be seen at the surgery whenever possible. If the doctor decides that you are too ill to come into the surgery, a home visit will be arranged.
Please phone before 10.30am to discuss this, this helps the doctors to plan their rounds.
Tell the Patient Services Assistant how you feel, this helps the doctor to assess the urgency of the visit.
To save you having to visit the surgery for cases where you don’t need to be seen but simply need advice and information, please telephone the surgery (01823 285400) and your call will be returned by the most appropriate member of the medical team.
We are a busy Practice with strong demand for appointments, if you are unable to keep an appointment we will understand; please let us know as far in advance as possible so that we can allocate the slot to someone else who needs it. Thank you.
